Behind the Lens at Churchill Downs: Professional Photographer Bee Buck on Mentorship, Inspiration, and Expertise

At Churchill Downs, the thrill of the Kentucky Derby extends beyond the track—into the hands of photographers like Bee Buck. By the age of 38, Bee had captured six Kentucky Derbies and two Breeders’ Cups, a testament to her expertise, perseverance, and passion. On the Boundless Podcast, she shared insights into her journey, offering inspiration for aspiring photographers and anyone pursuing a dual career. We shared insights back and forth, since I, too, have a duel career in horse racing and the medical field as a professional jockey and veterinarian.

Mentorship Shapes an Expert Eye

Bee’s journey started as largely self-taught, learning through trial and error and persistent practice. She credits a mentor from her polo photography days for helping her refine her unique style.

“I always go to him even today and ask, ‘What can I do better?’” Bee said.

Her story illustrates the power of mentorship, constructive feedback, and dedication, which allowed her to develop an eye for capturing the perfect moment in horse racing.

Capturing the Perfect Moment: Quality Over Quantity

With hundreds of horses on the track, Bee emphasizes quality over quantity. She studies horses’ routines months in advance, builds strong relationships with riders and trainers, and carefully chooses which shots to share.

“Sometimes you get seven thousand shots in a morning, but what matters is picking the one that shows the horse and rider in their best stride, in sync, and full of personality,” Bee explained.

Her approach highlights the importance of attention to detail, patience, and respect for both horse and rider—essential traits of an expert photographer.

Balancing Dual Careers with Focused Passion

Bee is also a Pediatrics ICU PCA unit secretary, demonstrating her ability to manage dual careers. She sees parallels between her work in the hospital and on the track: both require focus, discipline, and the ability to perform under pressure.

“It reminds me that I have multiple purposes in this world,” she shared.

This balance shows that inspiration and expertise aren’t limited to a single path—they can coexist across multiple passions.

I compared that to my work as an ER veterinarian. After an afternoon spent riding races as a jockey, working a night shift at the ER forces me to clear my mind by instantly refocusing on what is in front of me— doing my part to save lives or end suffering. We share our experiences of being alongside those who are suffering and the significance it brings to our lives.

Building Trust Through Respect and Presence

Trust is key in horse racing photography. Bee cultivates relationships year-round, connecting with trainers, riders, and barn staff. She respects barn protocols, always works under supervision, and never interferes with the horses.

“I always let someone know I’m in a barn, I don’t bring anything for the horses, and I follow the barn’s lead,” she explained.

Her method demonstrates that mentorship, respect, and professionalism open doors to opportunities others might miss.

Memorable Horses and Iconic Moments

Bee has photographed many notable horses, including Secret Oath, Tiz the Law, Letruska, Rich Strike, and many others. Her images capture both technical excellence and emotional connection, from sunrise workouts to post-race celebrations.

“Photography has given me an adventure I never imagined,” Bee said. “And every horse, every sunrise, every race gives me a new story to tell.”

Her work exemplifies expertise, mentorship, and inspiration in every frame.

Advice for Aspiring Photographers

Bee encourages newcomers to practice relentlessly, face challenges, and learn their equipment inside and out. She emphasizes that skill and persistence matter more than having the latest gear.

“Get out and shoot, push yourself, and learn your craft inside and out,” Bee advised.

Her guidance applies not only to photography but to any field where mentorship and dedication drive success.

Looking Ahead: Boundless Possibilities

Bee plans to cover international races, the entire Kentucky Derby Trail, and explore equestrian disciplines like show jumping and dressage. For her, the journey is about exploration, adventure, and growth, not just accolades.

“There’s always something different around every corner, and it’s fantastic,” she shared.

Key Takeaways from Bee Buck’s Journey:

  • Building trust and respect opens doors to exclusive opportunities.

  • Attention to detail and patience are essential for capturing perfection.

  • Dual careers require focus and discipline and creates perspective.
